I recently developed a website for Brandon Leo Singleton, an excellent illustrator. A lot of time and thought went into the design and development of his portfolio website. Here is a fun side by side comparison of his initial concept and his finished website.
I wasn’t worried about design. I was
confident that Brandon being an illustrator would take care of the design aspect of the site and of course he did an excellent job. I did very little design work besides basic layout and font selection.
From a developers point of view I had simple goals. I wanted to him have a result oriented website that produced a simple way of making money and presented a clear way to attract viewers that he could manage without my help.
I accomplished this in several ways. First I developed his website in WordPress , an open source content management system. This allows Brandon to update pictures, text, and movies with out any help from me or any knowledge of HTMl and CSS. After that I installed a blog on his site and insisted that he post new content on his website regularly. New content is really important for a website just starting out. It gives viewers a reason to visit a website and then come back over and over. I then installed a store on his website to give him another way of selling his work. The last thing i did was install an analytics program that tracked how many viewers were visiting his website and much more detailed information such as browser specs and geographic location. An analytics program is a very important part of a website because this allows the owner of the site to measure the success of campaigns and new content.
I was very satisfied how the entire process just came together. I am confident that Brandon now has a very effective tool that he can use to make him self successful. You can see his website here.
The idea of a result oriented website his how I plan to continue develop websites in the future and will be the building blocks of my development process.
